The lake is shaped like an upturned Y, 46 kilometres long and more than 400 metres deep, with Como at the foot of the western arm, Lecco at the foot of the eastern, and Bellagio on the point where they meet. Villas have lined the shore since Roman times, and Pliny the Younger kept two. Villa d'Este in Cernobbio has been a hotel since 1873 and has hosted a concours of historic cars since 1929. Como itself made its fortune in silk and still weaves it, behind a marble cathedral that took nearly four centuries to finish.
Days on the lake are measured by the ferries. Coffee on the quay as the first boat leaves, lunch on a terrace over the water, a spritz as the peaks turn pink. The funicular has carried people from Como up to Brunate since 1894 for the view over the whole basin. Driving here is slow by design, between stone walls and through tunnels cut in the rock, and all the better for it.
Fold the roof away for the road to Bellagio. The SP583 leaves Como along the inner shore of the western arm and winds for some 30 kilometres through Torno and Nesso, where a waterfall drops through a gorge beside the road, to the tip of the promontory. It is narrow enough that two cars pass with care, and each blind corner sharpens your attention. Wisteria hangs over the walls, and the water is close enough to hear. Bellagio's lanes climb in steps from the quay. Park, walk, eat. The car takes the same road home in the evening light, and at that pace, with the roof open, it is everything a lake drive should be.
A sports car is right for the hills between the two arms. From Bellagio the road climbs steeply through hairpins to the Madonna del Ghisallo at 754 metres, a small chapel hung with racing bicycles and jerseys, whose Madonna was named patron of cyclists in 1949. The corners come close together and your heart rate rises with the gradient. Carry on across the plateau to the Colma di Sormano, above 1,100 metres, where the view runs from the Alps to the plain, then descend toward Erba and back to Como. Allow about two hours for the loop from Bellagio. Compact dimensions and quick steering are what count up here, and a well-balanced car turns every hairpin into a small event.
Take something comfortable across the border: a grand touring car, or a luxury SUV. From Menaggio, on the western shore, the road turns inland past the little Lago di Piano to Porlezza and follows the north shore of Lake Lugano into Switzerland at Gandria. Lugano lies about an hour and a quarter from Como by this route, a city of arcades and palm-lined promenades where the language is Italian and the trains run to the minute. Have lunch on Piazza della Riforma. The return through Chiasso takes about half an hour. Throughout, the cabin is hushed, the seats hold you softly, and the car moves between two countries and three lakes with complete composure.
