Driving in Rome

Luxury car rental in Rome with Zeus Prestige begins at Fiumicino (FCO) or Ciampino (CIA) airport, at your hotel, or at an address you choose in the city. Rent or hire a convertible, a supercar, a sports car or a luxury SUV and see Lazio on your own terms. Convertible car rental in Rome suits the lake roads of the Castelli Romani, and supercar hire suits the climb to Monte Terminillo.

Rome counts its age from 753 BC. The Colosseum opened in AD 80. The Pantheon's dome, poured around AD 126, is still the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world, with an open eye at the top that lets the rain in. The Trevi Fountain was finished in 1762, and the dome of St Peter's, designed by Michelangelo, still rules the skyline.

Days here run on small habits. Espresso at the counter, cacio e pepe or carbonara for lunch in Testaccio or Trastevere, a walk up the Janiculum for the cannon that fires at noon. The Via Appia Antica leaves the city as it has since 312 BC, stretches of its basalt paving still in place under the umbrella pines. Much of the centre is closed to traffic by day, so the car is for what lies outside it: volcanic lakes, hill towns and a mountain that carries snow in winter.

Luxury Car Rental in Rome: Three Drives Beyond the Walls

The Castelli Romani

Put the roof down before you leave the city. Half an hour southeast, the Via dei Laghi climbs into the Alban Hills, the rim of an old volcano, and runs between two crater lakes. Castel Gandolfo sits high above Lake Albano and served as the popes' summer residence for centuries. Nemi, above the smaller lake, is known for its wild strawberries, and Frascati gave its name to the white wine of Rome. The air up here is cooler and smells of chestnut woods, and the lake appears so far below the road that your breath catches. Lunch is porchetta in Ariccia, eaten at a long shared table. Afterwards the car coasts back down toward the city, roof open, with St Peter's small in the distance.

Monte Terminillo

Bring a sports car or supercar to the peak known as the mountain of Rome. Follow the Via Salaria, the ancient salt road, northeast to Rieti, around an hour and a quarter from the city. From there the SS4bis, finished in 1938, climbs some 20 kilometres to Pian de' Valli at 1,615 metres in a run of wide, well-linked curves. The corners arrive at a steady rhythm, and your pulse quickens with the altitude and the revs. Beech forest gives way to open slopes and ski lifts, and in winter there can be snow up here while Rome sits in sunshine. Pause for the view over the Rieti plain. Then point the car downhill and let its brakes and steering show what they were made for.

Orvieto and Civita di Bagnoregio

The run north favours comfort: a grand tourer, or a luxury SUV. The A1 reaches Orvieto in about an hour and a half, a town set on a flat-topped cliff of volcanic tuff, with a cathedral begun in 1290 whose striped walls and gold mosaics catch the afternoon sun. Half an hour beyond, Civita di Bagnoregio stands alone on a crumbling pinnacle and is reached only by a footbridge. Between the two lie olive groves, small quiet roads and Lake Bolsena. Heading home, the cabin is hushed, the leather is warm from the sun, and the motorway slips by. The car makes a long day feel like a short evening drive.

Luxury Car Hire in Rome: Questions Answered

Can I hire a luxury car at Rome's airports?

Yes. We deliver to both Rome Fiumicino (FCO) and Rome Ciampino (CIA), as well as to hotels and addresses throughout the city. Let us know your flight and the handover will be timed to it.

Can I hire a car for a private jet arrival in Rome?

Yes. Ciampino (IATA: CIA, ICAO: LIRA) is Rome's main airport for private flights and has its own General Aviation Terminal. Your self-drive hire car can be delivered there, timed to your arrival.

Can I drive in the centre of Rome?

Large parts of central Rome fall inside a restricted traffic zone (ZTL) that cameras enforce at certain hours. Let us know your hotel and we will suggest a convenient place to hand over the car.

What type of car should I hire in Rome?

A convertible suits the Castelli Romani and the coast, the mountain road to Terminillo calls for a sports car or supercar, and longer runs north to Orvieto or south toward Naples are days for a luxury SUV or grand tourer.

How far are Rome's airports from the city centre?

Fiumicino lies about 30 kilometres from the centre, to the southwest, and takes 40 to 50 minutes by car. Ciampino is about 15 kilometres southeast, around half an hour.

Is Rome a good base for a driving holiday in Italy?

Yes. The Castelli Romani and Tivoli are under an hour away, and Orvieto about an hour and a half. Naples is a little over two hours south, Florence about three hours north, and Positano around three and a half hours.
