Marbella's old town still centres on the Plaza de los Naranjos, laid out in 1485 and shaded by orange trees, with whitewashed lanes running off it in every direction. The modern resort dates from 1954, when Prince Alfonso of Hohenlohe opened the Marbella Club on what became the Golden Mile. Puerto Banús followed in 1970, a marina of some 900 berths where superyachts moor a few steps from the boutiques. Above it all stands La Concha, the shell-shaped peak of the Sierra Blanca that shelters the town from the north wind.
Days here keep an easy rhythm. Coffee under the orange trees, a long lunch at a beach club, an evening walk along the marina as the cars arrive. The sierra gives Marbella its mild winters, and it also gives it roads: ten minutes inland the coast drops out of sight and the bends begin.
Fold the roof down for this short one. From the western edge of Marbella the A-7176 winds inland for about 15 kilometres above the Río Verde, past the long green reservoir of La Concepción, to the white village of Istán, where the road ends. There is little traffic, because there is nowhere else to go. The temperature drops as the road rises, the air smells of pine and wild herbs, and where the road edges out above the water your hands tighten a little on the wheel. Istán is a village of fountains, fed by channels the Moors cut centuries ago. Have a coffee on the square, then take the same bends downhill, with the sea returning to the windscreen and the exhaust note coming back off the rock.
This is the road supercars come to Marbella for. The A-397 leaves the coast at San Pedro de Alcántara and climbs for some 45 kilometres to Ronda, rising from sea level to more than 1,000 metres through the Sierra Bermeja and the edge of the Sierra de las Nieves. Curve follows curve with the Mediterranean falling away in the mirrors, and your pulse climbs with the road. Ronda rewards the effort. The town stands on both sides of a deep gorge, and its bullring, opened in 1785, is among the oldest in Spain. The road has closed at times after storms and a wildfire, so check that it is open before you set out. When it is, the descent to the coast in the late light is the reason to bring a serious car to this part of Spain.

Head west past Estepona and Algeciras, then take the N-340 over the last hills to the Mirador del Estrecho, where Morocco lies 14 kilometres away across the Strait of Gibraltar. Tarifa sits just below, about an hour and a half from Marbella: the southernmost town in continental Europe, whitewashed, windswept and full of kitesurfers. Twenty minutes further on, the Roman ruins of Baelo Claudia stand beside the dunes of Bolonia beach. The wind can be fierce outside. Inside, the cabin is still, the leather is soft under your hands, and the car covers the motorway home in unbroken calm.

There is no airport in Marbella itself. Visitors fly into Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport (AGP), about 50 kilometres to the east and around 40 to 45 minutes by motorway. We deliver to the airport in Málaga, so you can drive the coast to Marbella yourself.

Ronda is about 60 kilometres from Marbella, a little over an hour by the A-397 from San Pedro de Alcántara. The road is normally open all year but has closed at times, after storm damage in 2025 and a wildfire in 2026. Check its current status before you set out.
