The A-7000 leaves the northern edge of the city and climbs almost at once, close to 20 kilometres of hairpins through Aleppo pine, rising from sea level to the Puerto del León at around 900 metres. The air smells of resin and woodsmoke, and your stomach drops each time the hillside falls away on the outside of a switchback. Near the top, the roadside ventas serve the plato de los montes, a mountain plate of pork loin, chorizo, fried egg and potatoes. On the way back down the whole bay fills the windscreen, and the descent becomes the best part of the day.
This drive is built for a supercar or a sports car. Head west on the A-357 through the Guadalhorce valley, then pick up the A-367 at Ardales, where the road runs wide and quick across open sierra for some 50 kilometres. Hold a gear through a long uphill curve and you feel your pulse climb with the revs. Ronda arrives all at once, a town split by a gorge, with the Puente Nuevo spanning the drop on stone arches 98 metres tall since 1793. Walk to the bridge, look down, then walk back to the car. The same road is waiting in the other direction, and the engine sounds even better on the way home.

Take the A-45 north and turn off at Casabermeja for the A-7075, which climbs to El Torcal, a plateau above 1,000 metres where limestone laid down on a Jurassic seabed has weathered into stacked towers and narrow corridors. A short drive further north, Antequera holds the dolmens of Menga and Viera, burial chambers more than 5,000 years old. The cabin stays hushed where the road turns rough, the leather gives off a faint warm scent in the afternoon sun, and the car brings you back to the coast as fresh as when you set out.
