Driving in Bologna

Luxury car rental in Bologna from Zeus Prestige is delivered to Bologna Airport (BLQ), your hotel, or an address in the city. Rent or hire a supercar, a sports car, a convertible or a luxury SUV and explore Emilia-Romagna on your own terms. Luxury car hire in Bologna begins in the middle of Italy's Motor Valley, with the Apennine passes half an hour to the south.

Bologna's university was founded in 1088 and is the oldest in the western world. Its streets are lined with porticoes, some 60 kilometres of them, listed by UNESCO in 2021. The longest climbs for nearly four kilometres under 666 arches to the hilltop sanctuary of San Luca. Two medieval towers lean over the centre, and Piazza Maggiore spreads out before the unfinished façade of San Petronio. Italians call the city the learned, the fat and the red, for its scholars, its food and its brick.

The food earns the name. Tagliatelle with ragù, tortellini in broth and mortadella sliced thin, all within a few steps of the market lanes of the Quadrilatero. An evening passes easily under the arcades. Within forty minutes of the city are the factories and museums of several of Italy's most famous sports car makers, the dairies of Parmigiano Reggiano, and the first hairpins of the Apennines.

Luxury Car Rental in Bologna: Three Drives From the Porticoes

The Raticosa and the Futa

This is home ground for supercars and sports cars. The SS65 leaves Bologna to the south and climbs through Pianoro, Loiano and Monghidoro to the Passo della Raticosa at 968 metres, then runs on to the Passo della Futa at 903 metres. Until the motorway opened in 1964 this was the main road to Florence, and the Mille Miglia raced over it. The curves arrive in long, flowing sequences, and your heartbeat settles into their rhythm. The café at the Raticosa is a gathering point for anyone who loves an engine. Turn round at the Futa and drive it all again northbound. The car was made for roads like this, and it feels it.

Dozza and Brisighella

Take the roof down for the hills of Romagna. Half an hour east along the Via Emilia, Dozza is a village whose house walls have been painted by artists from all over the world, with the region's wine cellar in the fortress at the top of the street. Carry on to Brisighella, tucked into the hills beneath three crags, each with its own landmark: a clock tower, a fortress and a sanctuary. A raised, arcaded lane runs through the old houses, built for the donkeys that carried gypsum down from the quarries. The air smells of warm grass and olive groves, and the crests between the two villages put a flutter in your chest. The car takes the back roads home at its own unhurried pace, roof open to the evening.

Modena and the Food Valley

A luxury SUV or a grand tourer is the car for a day of eating. Modena is 40 minutes up the motorway. Its cathedral, bell tower and Piazza Grande have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, and in the attics of the old houses traditional balsamic vinegar ages in rows of small barrels for twelve years or more. The dairies that make Parmigiano Reggiano work early, so come in the morning to watch the wheels being lifted from the vats. The motor museums of the valley are all within a short drive. On the way back the cabin is calm, the seats are generous, and the car has all the space you need for what you bought.
