Driving in Florence

Luxury car rental in Florence from Zeus Prestige reaches you at Florence Airport (FLR), at your hotel, or at a villa in the Tuscan hills. Rent or hire a convertible, an exotic, a supercar or a luxury SUV and set your own route through Tuscany. Convertible car rental in Florence suits the Chianti road in any season, and exotic car rental suits the mountain passes toward Bologna.

The Medici banked here, and their money built much of what you came to see. Brunelleschi closed his dome over the cathedral in 1436, and it remains the largest brick dome ever built. The Ponte Vecchio has carried shops across the Arno since 1345, goldsmiths among them since the 16th century. Michelangelo's David stands in the Accademia, and a bronze copy looks over the city from Piazzale Michelangelo, a view you can drive to.

The historic centre is closed to most traffic, so you walk it. Lunch is a bistecca alla fiorentina, thick-cut and rare, or a lampredotto roll from a market cart. At six, order a Negroni in the city that invented it. The car belongs to the hills, and they start at the edge of town: vineyards to the south, mountain passes to the north.

Luxury Car Rental in Florence: Three Drives Into Tuscany

The Chiantigiana

Lower the roof at the city limits. The SR222, known as the Chiantigiana, leaves Florence to the south and follows the spine of Chianti Classico through Greve, Panzano and Castellina toward Siena, about 70 kilometres of ridges, vineyards and cypress-lined drives. Greve has held its market on the same triangular piazza since the Middle Ages. With the roof open you smell cut hay and woodsmoke, and each time the road drops off a crest you feel it in your chest. Stop where a cellar door is open and buy a bottle for the evening. The car is happiest here at an easy pace, engine burbling, sun on the dashboard, with the towers of Siena coming up on the horizon.

The Futa and Raticosa Passes

Sports cars and supercars have been proving themselves on this road for a century. The SS65 climbs north out of Florence toward Bologna, completed in 1759 and the main route between the two cities until the motorway opened in 1964. The Mille Miglia ran over it, and the bends between the Passo della Futa at 903 metres and the Passo della Raticosa at 968 metres are still among the best known in Italy. Quick sweepers give way to tight uphill corners, and your pulse keeps time with the gearchanges. Twelve kilometres separate the two passes, with a café at the top of the Raticosa where drivers and riders compare notes. Turn round there, or carry on to Bologna for lunch. Either way, the car shows its character on the way back down.

The Val d'Orcia

Give this long, slow day to something built for distance: a grand tourer, or an SUV with a view over the hedgerows. Take the motorway south past Siena and continue to San Quirico d'Orcia, about an hour and three quarters from Florence, where the SP146 winds east to Pienza and Montepulciano. The Val d'Orcia has been a UNESCO World Heritage landscape since 2004: bare clay hills, lone farmhouses, and the cypress avenues that appear on every postcard of Tuscany. Pope Pius II rebuilt Pienza as his ideal Renaissance town in the 15th century, and its lanes smell faintly of pecorino. Back on the road the cabin is cool and still, the seats are a relief after a morning on foot, and the car swallows the journey home while the light goes gold behind you.

Luxury Car Hire in Florence: Questions Answered

Can I hire a luxury car at Florence Airport?

Yes. Zeus Prestige delivers to Florence Airport (FLR), also known as Peretola, and to hotels and villas in the city and the surrounding hills. Give us your landing time and the handover will be arranged to match.

Can I hire a car for a private jet arrival in Florence?

Yes. Florence Airport (IATA: FLR, ICAO: LIRQ) handles private flights, and larger jets often use Pisa (IATA: PSA, ICAO: LIRP), about an hour to the west. We deliver your self-drive hire car to whichever one you land at, ready when you step off the aircraft.

Can I drive in the centre of Florence?

The historic centre is a limited traffic zone, known as the ZTL, with camera-controlled entry. Most visitors keep the car outside it and walk in. Tell us where you are staying and we will agree a handover point that works for your hotel.

What type of car should I hire in Florence?

A convertible suits Chianti and the roads south toward Siena, the Futa and Raticosa passes call for a sports car or supercar, and the Val d'Orcia or the coast is a day for a luxury SUV or grand tourer.

How far is Siena from Florence by car?

Siena is about 75 kilometres south of Florence, roughly an hour by motorway. Along the Chiantigiana, allow closer to two hours without stops.

Is Florence a good base for a driving holiday in Tuscany?

Yes. Siena, Pisa and Bologna are each a little over an hour away, and the Val d'Orcia is under two hours. Rome is about three hours south and Milan about three and a half hours north.

Choose from our cabriolets, exotics, supercars and SUVs, tell us where in Tuscany you are staying, and the keys will be ready for your luxury car hire.
