Cannes was a fishing village until 1834, when the English statesman Lord Brougham stopped here on his way to Italy, liked it, and built a villa. Others followed. The Croisette now curves along the bay for about two kilometres, lined with palms and grand hotels, and ends at the Palais des Festivals, where the film festival, first held in 1946, lays its red carpet each May. Above the old port, the lanes of Le Suquet climb to a medieval tower with a view across the water to the Lérins Islands.
The day starts at the Marché Forville, under its covered hall, with socca hot from the pan and flowers from the hills. A boat crosses to the islands in a quarter of an hour: Sainte-Marguerite, where the Man in the Iron Mask was held, and Saint-Honorat, where monks still make wine. By evening the Croisette fills with people watching cars and cars watching people. The coast and the hills are for the daytime.
The roof comes down for the Corniche d'Or. West of Cannes, beyond Théoule-sur-Mer, the coast road winds for some 30 kilometres around the Esterel massif to Saint-Raphaël, cut into red volcanic rock above a deep blue sea. The Touring Club de France opened it in 1903, and it remains among the great coastal drives of Europe. Every headland brings a new cove, the pines smell hot and sweet, and on the cliff sections the colour and the drop together make your heart skip. Stop at Agay for lunch by the water. The car is in no hurry on the way back, with the sun behind it and the rock glowing ahead.
Sports cars and supercars come to Cannes for the Route Napoléon. The road follows the path Napoleon took in March 1815 on his return from Elba, climbing from the coast through Grasse into the mountains toward Castellane, about 80 kilometres away. Beyond Grasse the bends open out, the road widens, and the passes rise to around 1,000 metres with the sea shrinking in the mirror. Your pulse settles into the rhythm of the corners. Saint-Vallier-de-Thiey makes a good coffee stop, and Castellane sits beneath a chapel on a rock at the gateway to the Verdon. The return runs downhill toward the sea, and the car gets to show its brakes, its balance and its voice.
The hill villages suit an easy-going car, a luxury SUV or a grand touring car. Mougins is ten minutes inland, a spiral of lanes where Picasso spent his last years. Grasse, the perfume capital, is twenty minutes further, and its workshops have distilled jasmine and rose since the 18th century. From there the road east runs to Tourrettes-sur-Loup and Saint-Paul-de-Vence, walled and full of galleries, with the Fondation Maeght in the pines outside it. Each stop is short and each village has a square for lunch. Between them the cabin is hushed and faintly scented with leather, and the car slips from one village to the next without effort.
