Luxury car rental in Salerno from Zeus Prestige is arranged for your hotel, your villa or the port, and for Salerno Costa d'Amalfi Airport (QSR) or Naples Airport (NAP). Choose an exotic car, a sports car, a cabriolet or a luxury SUV and drive the southern end of the Amalfi Coast on your own terms. Convertible hire fits the plain toward Paestum, and sports car rental in Salerno suits the coast road toward Positano.
Salerno lies on the Gulf of Salerno at the start of the Amalfi Coast. By the eleventh century the Schola Medica Salernitana was already active, a medical school seen as a forerunner of the modern university. Robert Guiscard besieged the city in December 1076, and Salerno became capital of Norman southern Italy by 1100. Its Romanesque cathedral dates from the period after the siege. In September 1943 the Allied landings of Operation Avalanche came ashore here.
The city counts roughly 126,000 residents. The Lungomare Trieste, a palm-lined boulevard, follows the waterfront, and the medieval Castello di Arechi looks over the gulf from the hills above the old town. Salerno makes a calm base after the crowds of the coast farther along, and the road to Paestum, Amalfi and Ravello begins at the edge of town.
Roof down, head south across the open plain. Settlers from Sybaris founded Paestum around 600 BCE as Poseidonia, and three large Doric temples rose there between about 550 and 450 BCE. The Temple of Athena stands on the highest point of the town, and the National Archaeological Museum holds the Tomb of the Diver. UNESCO listed the site in 1998. Sun-warmed stone and the salt of the nearby sea drift through the open cabin, and the car idles outside the temples in the sun.
The SS163 is sports car territory. The road follows the cliffs west of Salerno with the Tyrrhenian Sea far below, and every hairpin sets your pulse racing a little harder. Positano waits farther along, its tiers of pastel houses stacked up the cliff. Pull in where the road widens and listen to the metal contract as the engine cools.
The climb to Ravello suits a plush coupe or large SUV, which sits 350 metres above the sea. Nicola Rufolo built Villa Rufolo in 1270, and Richard Wagner drew on it in 1880 for the stage design of Parsifal. Villa Cimbrone has the Terrace of Infinity, and the Ravello Festival has run each summer since 1953. Soft leather, a muted engine and a widening view of the coast set the mood for the climb.
Cars go to hotels and villas in Salerno, to the port, to Salerno Costa d'Amalfi Airport (QSR) and to Naples Airport (NAP). Give us your arrival day and address, and the handover is arranged.
Open-top cars suit Paestum and the shore, an agile sports car takes on the SS163, and a touring coupe or roomy SUV copes with Ravello and longer days.
On set dates in the busy months, the SS163 restricts traffic by number plate between 10:00 and 18:00. Check the calendar for your travel dates before you set off.
Ravello sits at 350 metres above sea level, above the coast near Atrani.
