Rimini began as the Roman colony of Ariminum, founded in 268 BC. Its castle, one of the best preserved in Italy, was finished in the fifteenth century. From there, Urbino is another 33 kilometres inland, home to the Ducal Palace that Federico da Montefeltro began in the second half of the 15th century. Sea air gives way to dry hill air on the way, and you step out under an open sky.

The republic lies about 10 kilometres from the Adriatic near Rimini, and Mount Titano rises to 749 metres, topped by three medieval towers: Guaita, Cesta and Montale. UNESCO listed the historic centre and the mountain in 2008. The road tightens and your pulse climbs with it, each bend pressing you gently into the seat, and the engine's growl bounces off the stone walls near the top.
