Porto Cervo is a village of around 420 residents, part of the municipality of Arzachena, about 28 kilometres from Olbia. Work on the Costa Smeralda began in 1961, financed by a consortium led by Prince Karim Aga Khan, and architects including Jacques Couelle, Luigi Vietti and Michele Busiri Vici shaped the resort in the 1950s and 1960s. The coast it opened up stretches for about 20 kilometres.
Boats define the place. The old port, built in the 1960s as a fishing harbour, sits beside the modern marina, which has around 700 berths, 100 of them for megayachts. The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda keeps its clubhouse at the new marina, and in summer the quay fills with crews, visitors and cars headed for the beaches.
Roof down, follow the coast toward Baja Sardinia and Cannigione, two villages of Arzachena. The Costa Smeralda runs for roughly 20 kilometres, and the Spiaggia del Principe is among its best-known beaches. Pull over where the granite meets the water and listen to the hush of the sea. Warm air carries the scent of myrtle and sun-baked rock into the cabin, and the car rolls back into Porto Cervo in time for the evening quay.

Monte Limbara rises to 1,362 metres, the highest peak in the region, and Tempio Pausania, its cultural capital, sits at 560 metres. The cabin stays quiet and smells of leather as the road climbs, and the air outside cools a little with every bend.
