Driving in Cortina d Ampezzo

Zeus Prestige meets you in the Dolomites with luxury car rental in Cortina d'Ampezzo, delivered to your hotel or chalet in town and to Venice Marco Polo (VCE) and Treviso (TSF), the nearest airports. Rent or hire a sports car, a supercar, a luxury SUV or a convertible and take the mountain passes at your own pace. Convertible hire suits the high roads in summer, while exotic car rental in Cortina suits the hairpins that climb out of the valley.

Cortina sits at 1,224 metres in the Ampezzo valley, beside the Boite river, ringed by limestone walls. The Tofana range rises to the west, topped by the 3,244-metre Tofana di Mezzo, and Monte Antelao, the highest peak of the Ampezzo Dolomites at 3,264 metres, stands across the valley. The town is nicknamed the Queen of the Dolomites. It hosted the Winter Olympics in 1956 and shared the 2026 Games with Milan.

The centre belongs to walkers. Corso Italia is cobbled and car-free, running to Piazza Angelo Dibona, and the car waits at the edge while you stroll between the shops and cafés. Ski areas on Faloria and around Cinque Torri and Lagazuoi give the valley its winter life, and in the warmer months the same slopes turn into the start of some of the best-known mountain drives in Italy.

Luxury Car Rental in Cortina d'Ampezzo: Three Drives Through the Dolomites

Passo Falzarego and Valparola

Fold the roof back for the first climb out of town. The SS48 rises from Cortina to the Falzarego Pass at 2,105 metres, with the Tofane rock walls crowding the windscreen and the air cooling a little with every bend. At the pass a gondola lifts to Lagazuoi at 2,762 metres, where a tunnel dug by Italian troops under Austro-Hungarian lines during the First World War is open to visitors. Carry on along the SP24 over the Valparola Pass, past Forte Tre Sassi, and drop toward the Val Badia. Winter snow and avalanches disrupt the high roads, so choose your dates with that in mind. The open car does its best work here, hearing the cowbells before the cabin has gone quiet.

Passo Giau

Bring a supercar or sports car with sharp steering. The Giau Pass reaches 2,236 metres between Cortina and Selva di Cadore, with the Nuvolau and Averau peaks standing over a wide mountain pasture at its foot. On the way down toward Selva di Cadore the road strings together 29 hairpin bends and three avalanche tunnels, and your pulse climbs with each blind corner. Few roads in the Dolomites pack so many bends into so short a distance. At the top, switch off and let the engine tick as it cools, then drive it again in the other direction.

Tre Cime di Lavaredo

The longest day out suits a grand tourer, with a luxury SUV as the taller alternative. Head northeast to Misurina, then take the toll road that climbs to Rifugio Auronzo at around 2,320 metres, directly beneath the three great peaks. The tallest, the Cima Grande, stands at 2,999 metres, and the Dolomites around it have held UNESCO World Heritage status since 2009. The cabin stays hushed on the climb, the seats smell of warm leather in the sun, and the car waits patiently in the car park while you walk out toward the base of the rock.

Luxury Car Hire in Cortina d'Ampezzo: Questions Answered

Do you deliver to Cortina d'Ampezzo?

Yes. Zeus Prestige delivers to hotels and chalets in Cortina, and to Venice Marco Polo (VCE) and Treviso (TSF), the nearest airports, including their private aviation terminals (ICAO LIPZ and LIPH). Send us your hotel's name and we will schedule the handover for when you reach the valley.

What type of car should I hire in Cortina d'Ampezzo?

Take a convertible over the Falzarego and Valparola passes, a sports car or supercar to the hairpins of the Giau, and a grand tourer to the Tre Cime and longer days across the Dolomites, with a luxury SUV when you need more room.

How far is Venice Marco Polo Airport from Cortina d'Ampezzo?

Venice Marco Polo is about 148 kilometres from Cortina and Treviso about 138 kilometres. Allow roughly two and a quarter hours by road from either.

Are the Dolomites passes open all year?

Not reliably. Snow and avalanches can disrupt the high passes in winter, the Giau included, so check road conditions before you set out.

Is Cortina d'Ampezzo a good base for a driving holiday in the Dolomites?

Yes. The Falzarego, Valparola and Giau passes all start close to town, and the Tre Cime are within a day's reach. Venice and its airport lie about two and a quarter hours to the south.
