Driving in Bergamo

Luxury car rental in Bergamo with Zeus Prestige is delivered to Milan Bergamo Airport (BGY), your hotel, or an address in the upper or lower city. Rent or hire a sports car, a convertible, a supercar or a luxury SUV and head for the lakes and the mountains yourself. Car hire at Bergamo Airport puts you ten minutes from a walled hill town and about an hour from two lakes and an Alpine pass.

Bergamo is two cities. The lower one is 19th-century and businesslike. The upper one, Città Alta, sits on its hill inside more than five kilometres of Venetian walls, built in the 16th century and listed by UNESCO in 2017. A funicular has joined the two since 1887. At the top, Piazza Vecchia lies beneath a medieval tower whose bell still tolls a hundred times at ten each night, and behind it stand the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore and the marble Colleoni Chapel. The composer Donizetti was born here in 1797.

Bergamo eats like the mountains behind it: casoncelli, stuffed pasta with butter and sage, and polenta with almost everything. Stracciatella ice cream was invented in a café in the upper city in 1961. Walk the walls at sunset, when the plain turns gold as far as Milan. Then look the other way, because the valleys begin at the city's back door.

Luxury Car Rental in Bergamo: Three Drives From the Walls

Lake Iseo

Lake Iseo is made for an open roof. It lies about 30 kilometres east of Bergamo, smaller and quieter than its famous neighbours, with the wooded hump of Monte Isola rising from the middle. Start at Sarnico, where Art Nouveau villas line the water, and follow the western shore north toward Lovere. In places the road is cut through rock with the lake directly beneath it, and the sudden drop on your right sharpens your senses. The air is cool and smells of water and cut reeds. On the southern side lie the vineyards of Franciacorta. Have lunch on the quay at Lovere, then let the car idle back along the shore with the roof still down.

San Pellegrino and the Passo San Marco

Sports cars and supercars should go north, in summer or early autumn. The road up the Val Brembana passes San Pellegrino Terme, a spa town with a grand casino and hotel from the early 1900s, then narrows through San Giovanni Bianco and Piazza Brembana to Mezzoldo. From there it climbs about 1,000 metres to the Passo San Marco at 1,992 metres. The Venetians built this route in 1592 and 1593 to reach the Alps without crossing Milanese land, and their stone refuge still stands just below the top. The hairpins tighten, the trees fall away, and your heart rate climbs with them. At the summit the Valtellina opens to the north. The descent to Bergamo gives the car's brakes and steering a long, satisfying workout.

Lecco and Varenna

Choose a grand tourer or a luxury SUV for the eastern arm of Lake Como. Lecco is about 40 minutes from Bergamo, a lakeside town under sharp limestone peaks and the setting of Italy's most famous novel, The Betrothed. From there the old shore road runs north through tunnels and fishing villages to Varenna, half an hour on, where a lakeside walkway leads to a cluster of pastel houses and a villa garden over the water. Ferries cross to Bellagio in fifteen minutes. The day is short on distance and long on views. In the car the seats are soft, the cabin is quiet, and the return to Bergamo passes almost unnoticed.

Luxury Car Hire in Bergamo: Questions Answered

Can I get luxury car hire at Bergamo Airport?

Yes. Zeus Prestige delivers luxury hire cars to Milan Bergamo Airport (BGY), at Orio al Serio, about 5 kilometres from the city. We also deliver to hotels in Bergamo and around the lakes. Send us your flight and the car will be ready when you land.

Can I hire a car for a private jet arrival in Bergamo?

Yes. Bergamo's airport (IATA: BGY, ICAO: LIME) has a dedicated private aviation terminal, separate from the commercial one. Your self-drive hire car meets you there.

What type of car should I hire in Bergamo?

Take a convertible for the lakes, a sports car or supercar for the mountain valleys and passes, and a luxury SUV or grand tourer for winter, ski trips and longer journeys.

How far is Milan from Bergamo by car?

Milan is about 50 kilometres southwest of Bergamo, usually 45 minutes to an hour by motorway depending on traffic.

How far is Bergamo Airport from Città Alta?

About 7 kilometres. Allow 15 to 20 minutes by car from the terminal to the gates of the upper city.

Is Bergamo a good base for a driving holiday in northern Italy?

Yes. Lake Iseo and the Lecco shore of Lake Como are each about 40 minutes away, and Milan under an hour. Verona and Lake Garda are a little over an hour east, and St. Moritz is around three hours north.

Choose from our sports cars, cabriolets, SUVs and supercars, tell us whether to meet you at the airport or in town, and the keys will be ready for your luxury car hire.
