Henry the Lion founded Munich in 1158 beside a monks' settlement on the river Isar, and the twin domed towers of the Frauenkirche have marked its centre since 1488. Drop the roof for the lakes. An hour south of the city, the Tegernsee lies in a bowl of wooded mountains, circled by a shore road of some 20 kilometres through Gmund, Tegernsee and Rottach-Egern. Painted farmhouses, boathouses and onion-domed churches pass at an easy pace, and the water is clear enough to see the stones on the bottom. The air smells of cut grass and woodsmoke, and where the road lifts above the shore the view makes your breath catch. A former Benedictine monastery on the east bank has brewed beer for centuries and serves lunch in its vaulted hall. The car has a gentle day of it, roof open, engine barely above idle, and looks entirely at home parked by the water.
Supercars and sports cars get their day here. The A95 runs south from Munich toward Garmisch, and long stretches of it carry no general speed limit. Leave it for Kochel am See, about an hour from the city, where the B11 climbs the Kesselberg in a sequence of hairpins and sweeping curves to the Walchensee, some 200 metres higher. Hill-climb races ran here in the early years of motoring, and the pass has its own posted limits today. Your pulse rises through the bends and settles at the top, where the lake appears, turquoise and very still, with the Karwendel range behind it. Follow the shore, stop for coffee at Urfeld, and let the car stretch again on the motorway home.
The road to the king's castles calls for comfort: a grand touring car or a luxury SUV. Head southwest for about an hour and three quarters to Füssen, where Neuschwanstein stands on its crag above the Alpsee, begun by Ludwig II in 1869 and never finished. His father's castle, Hohenschwangau, faces it across the valley. On the way, turn off for the Wieskirche, a pilgrimage church alone in a meadow, plain outside and a riot of rococo within, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. The road crosses open pasture with the Alps as a wall to the south. Inside the car the seats are firm and warm, the cabin is quiet at speed, and it makes light of the distance home.
